5 Things to Do Before You Release Your Music

1)      Copyright Everything: This goes without saying, copyrighting your music is a MUST.  There is no reason why an artist should not copyright his or her music.  There is no excuse.  The copyright office has made the process super simple with an online submission site.  Simply register with ECO (Electronic Copyright Office) and submit your music.  There is a small fee to register your music. The most important part is reading through the instructions to make sure you are properly submitting all material.  If you don’t like to read, find an uncle that graduated from college with no less than a 2.5 grade point average and you will be fine.

2)      Lock in Your Distributor:  One great debate is what music distribution company an artist / musician should use to get their music to the masses.  Of course, do your research but I will draw a line in the sand for you if you’re an independent artist.  There are many music distribution companies like CDBaby, Songtradr, Landr, etc., BUT at the top of the list is TUNECORE and DISTROKID (I use both for various reasons).  After you have selected the distro company, add your projected SINGLE(s) and ALBUM(s) for the next sixth months to your discography.

3)      Publishing Duh:  Register with a nationally recognized publishing company.  After registering with a publishing company, immediately register your music to ensure you are getting paid when your music is played/used.  There is an open discussion somewhere on the planet about which publishing company is the best: SESAC, ASCAP, BMI or Harry Fox Agency?  Personally, I am registered with ASCAP but I have heard great things about the opposing companies.  Bottom line, do your research.  Ask your artist friends, see what their thoughts are, and then go with your gut (hoping it’s not gas).

4)      Get Nielsen:  It’s a very interesting thing that many artist don’t know about Nielsen Sound scan.  Nielsen has a very powerful place in the music industry and I would love to explain what that is but for the sake of time, visit the website and see for yourself.  Register with Nielsen Virtual Encoding (may require sending an email to customer service to create a login) to ensure that your music has an identity when being played on the Radio and TV airways (a indolent explanation).  Upload every song in your catalog and make sure you have your UPC number and release date available for each song.

5)      Sound Exchange:  Sound Exchange is a very unique entity controlled by the government oddly enough.  They collect royalties from internet radio stations and other internet media outlets.  Year after year, Sound Exchange collects millions of dollars that go unclaimed because many artist have no clue that they need to register their music with S.E...  Take the time out of your schedule to make sure that your music is registered with S.E. to collect optimal profits for your creativity.

H.E.R. - The 3rd Wave (Album #3)

H.E.R. - I Used To Know Her (The Prelude)

In August 2018, R&B artist H.E.R. released her third album/EP of new ,much anticipated, music.  There is no question that H.E.R. has surely taken a lead role in the revival of the R&B genre which at one time was thought to be a dead market for up and coming musicians/singers.  She  has been able to develop a very Authentic sound that not only fits her voice but ties into her "Music First" image.  In many interviews, she has even stated that she wants her fans to focus on her music and not her looks/appearance.  This speaks volumes in an American society that literally thrives off of fashion and beauty.  H.E.R. is redefining the status quo for R&B music and bringing a very classy feel into a market of overly sexed driven lyrics.

H.E.R.'s latest effort, "I Used To Know Her", maintains some of the edge of her first two projects but provides a bit more diversity in sound.  As a disclaimer, I am a harsh critic and I hold H.E.R. to a very high standard right now.  That being said, after first listening to this project, I was a tad disappointed because I expected "The Vibe" to just hit me as it did with previous projects.  As I journeyed through the EP, one of the lead songs, "Could've Been" ft. Bryson Tiller immediately caught my ear.  The song felt like an instant hit after listening just a few seconds.  "Could've Been" maintained much of the sound and energy that I appreciated with most of her previous songs.

Thankfully, I did not give up on "I Used to Know Her".  While driving to Atlanta, I decided to take a second listen which turned into a REPEAT fest until I arrived in Buckhead-ATL.  I hate to say that it took a few listens to connect with the new project but it is by far a great body of work.

Ro James - Indiana Jones

Life is about the discovery of new and great things to observe, use and spread to others due to the level of “Greatness” within the discovery itself.  Ro James is indeed a discovery.  His acoustic rock r&b style blends into no other category but his own.  His video “Indian Jones” (directed by BKLYN AIR) shows a very soulful side to Ro James as he outlines his travels of love with a very different kind of individual.  Take the journey for yourself!

HS87 has added a phenomenal singer and song writer by the name of PRESTON HARRIS.  P. Harris stems from San Diego, CA. and has worked with a plethora of producers and musicians in the Cali music scene.  He lent his vocals to create what would be considered #Classics in the R&B realm.  Producer HITBOY definitely knew what he was doing when he signed this young talent to the roster.

Preston Harris has now added his melodious voice to his debut project LOVE CRAZY EP.  This album is literally what we like to call a "Front To Back".  The lead single Love Crazy sets the tone and the surrounding 6 songs follow its grand lead.  We wont bore you with the adjectives to describe this great listening experience.  Experience it for yourself!

Erykah Badu - The Other Side Of The Game (Throwback)

Durning an era of music where black consciousness was being brought through to you via your local radio station, there was a young Texan woman who could do nothing but captivate your ear.  The sweet alto of Erykah Badu could do know wrong.  She spoke for women with grace and she respected the role of her male counterpart in every lyric she put forth.  On or off stage, her energy was that of a Queen who had everything to gain by spreading the word of truth to everyone who could listen.  Her single "The Other Side Of The Game" spoke of a life that many had endured but very few were willing to talk about.  It is forever a classic in Soul Music!
