H.E.R. - The 3rd Wave (Album #3)

H.E.R. - I Used To Know Her (The Prelude)

In August 2018, R&B artist H.E.R. released her third album/EP of new ,much anticipated, music.  There is no question that H.E.R. has surely taken a lead role in the revival of the R&B genre which at one time was thought to be a dead market for up and coming musicians/singers.  She  has been able to develop a very Authentic sound that not only fits her voice but ties into her "Music First" image.  In many interviews, she has even stated that she wants her fans to focus on her music and not her looks/appearance.  This speaks volumes in an American society that literally thrives off of fashion and beauty.  H.E.R. is redefining the status quo for R&B music and bringing a very classy feel into a market of overly sexed driven lyrics.

H.E.R.'s latest effort, "I Used To Know Her", maintains some of the edge of her first two projects but provides a bit more diversity in sound.  As a disclaimer, I am a harsh critic and I hold H.E.R. to a very high standard right now.  That being said, after first listening to this project, I was a tad disappointed because I expected "The Vibe" to just hit me as it did with previous projects.  As I journeyed through the EP, one of the lead songs, "Could've Been" ft. Bryson Tiller immediately caught my ear.  The song felt like an instant hit after listening just a few seconds.  "Could've Been" maintained much of the sound and energy that I appreciated with most of her previous songs.

Thankfully, I did not give up on "I Used to Know Her".  While driving to Atlanta, I decided to take a second listen which turned into a REPEAT fest until I arrived in Buckhead-ATL.  I hate to say that it took a few listens to connect with the new project but it is by far a great body of work.

NEW MUSIC

Gene Noble - Trust (Under The Radar)

2015 - R&B has been in need of a TRUE performing soul singer with dynamic range like legendary Will Downing, Bilal and D'Angelo and I think the music game has found it in Gene Noble.  I am truly amazed at the falsetto and baritone that can be accomplished by this young man.  Being impressed is not an easy task but it seems as if I have crossed the line with songs like "You All I Give A Fuck About" and "Lies".  Mr. Noble takes his vocals to task on the new single "TRUST" over a super sensual track.  At the end of a long hallway filled with musical selections, you can be the judge of where Gene Noble stands..

Ro James - Indiana Jones

Life is about the discovery of new and great things to observe, use and spread to others due to the level of “Greatness” within the discovery itself.  Ro James is indeed a discovery.  His acoustic rock r&b style blends into no other category but his own.  His video “Indian Jones” (directed by BKLYN AIR) shows a very soulful side to Ro James as he outlines his travels of love with a very different kind of individual.  Take the journey for yourself!

Preston Harris - Love Crazy EP (Under The Radar)

HS87 has added a phenomenal singer and song writer by the name of PRESTON HARRIS.  P. Harris stems from San Diego, CA. and has worked with a plethora of producers and musicians in the Cali music scene.  He lent his vocals to create what would be considered #Classics in the R&B realm.  Producer HITBOY definitely knew what he was doing when he signed this young talent to the roster.

Preston Harris has now added his melodious voice to his debut project LOVE CRAZY EP.  This album is literally what we like to call a "Front To Back".  The lead single Love Crazy sets the tone and the surrounding 6 songs follow its grand lead.  We wont bore you with the adjectives to describe this great listening experience.  Experience it for yourself!

Teyana Taylor – ‘The Cassette Tape 1994’

‘The Cassette Tape 1994’ - Anytime I see a title with the 90's in it, the musical interest peeks to new heights.  Add G.O.O.D. Music's Teyana Taylor to the mix of the news title and mouse clicks will be happening until the site comes up.  The music recreations were done perfectly to compliment new lyrics and her infectious voice.  There are 5 new songs of good summer fun that can't be turned off from beginning to end.  Side-note: (WARNING) This may not be for the person who doesn't want to hear any variations to the original music of some of 90s biggest hits.

Teyana Taylor has kept up social status in 2015 with her debut album VII which was underrated but for R&B fans it was a classic that will be appreciated years after its birth.

Pharrell Williams - Freedom

Pharrell Williams is surely the guy you know will bring something inspirational to music scene.  There is no doubt that he accomplishes this with his latest video release "FREEDOM".  The music is welcoming and the lyrics speak to one theme: The evolution of our thinking.  The video has very powerful imaging that drives the point of no matter where you are from you must seek the freedom on your mind from the negative of the world surrounding you.  Bottom line, we are one and we must begin to unify our efforts so a better life will find us at every turn.

At-least that's what we got from it...

The Eminem Effect - Why Meek Mill Can't Win Against Drake

Anyone who has ever seen the movie 8 Mile knows that Eminem brought about the resurgence of battle rap.  Though battle rap has been around since the beginning of hip-hop, Eminem's movie highlighted a specific style of battle.  The Psychological Break down approach.   This is something that Drake (or his writers) are very good at because its his complete style of rap (Let me also give props where its due by stating that Kanye & Eminem pioneered the style "in the mainstream" since entering the music scene as artists).  It's clear that audiences always respond better when you make them think about what's being said.  So, when its time for Meek Mill to respond and he brings that fire aggression, that's signature to his style, but doesn't really break down Drake's faults then it just comes across as the same ole same ole.

The reality is battle rap or diss tracks were taken to another level when Ether dropped by Nas.  Jay-Z was killing Nas with his wit and arrogant flow initially but in the final rounds Nas came through with a winner.  Nas broke down Jay-Z so badly that, in my opinion, he delivered the knock out blow that made him the clear winner in their rap battle.  Nas clearly used the Psychological Break down approach and had Jay-Z fans like  DAAAAAMMMNNNN!

Now, I could be wrong.  Meek Mill may come back with diss after diss with an arsenal of punch lines, metaphors and jabs to put Drake in his place but as history shows people rarely deviate from their style of rap.  So, Ideally Drake is probably laughing all the way to the bank because for the kid everyone secretly hated on, he is now becoming the guy you want to win.

Meek Mill Responds To Drake With A Diss Track "Wanna Know"

upload.png

Meek Mill came back with a Diss record going at Drake with a side salad of aggression on a beat by Jhalil Beats & Swizz Beats.  The song had promise but got stopped by a few movie and sound clips after every couple of bars.  I get it, it was kind of funny and he thru a few jabs but nothing really stuck out that made me say YES, HE KILLED DRAKE....   Nope didn't happen.  Even hardcore Meek Mill fans are like WTF.  So as it stands, it's Drake 2 - Meek 0.... Til the next episode but for now, I don't "Wanna Know" at all

Drake's "Back To Back" Meek Mill Diss Song

Drake's "Back To Back" Diss song got so much hype that I thought I was going to hear this ETHER type song that was going to really put Meek Mill in his place... I got 6 lines (ehhh maybe 8) of Fire and the regular flow over this average beat... I enjoyed it because I think battles and verbal beefs are good for sales and streams in Hip-hop.  I actually like when people are getting paid to entertain the public and thats exactly what has happened.  The memes and vid-memes have been absolutely hilarious.  But, lets be clear, in this battle Meek has yet to respond and whether you like him or not, he is known to bring the fire.

The level of greatness pales in comparison to the Jay-z & Nas battle of yesterday but we will wait and see how far it goes...

To Be Continued...
